Disulfiram – Refusal/Antabus

Translation:

Protocol for Ordering Pharmacy Preparations by Healthcare Institutions and Providers

Guidelines for the Treating Party, Supplying Pharmacy, and Receiving Patient

Disulfiram is the active ingredient in Refusal and Antabus. Since the variants of Refusal and Antabus registered in the Netherlands are no longer available, a pharmacy preparation can be used to treat the patient. This preparation is made by Regenboog Apotheek Bavel, which is why the patient receives medication from Bavel.

Appendix A Example of Delivery

On Monday, May 14, 2018, treating physician Jansen sends a prescription for patient Pietersen to Regenboog Apotheek. Regenboog Apotheek will usually send the medication the next day, in this case, Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Patient Pietersen will then receive the medication on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. The delivery contains medication for 28 days, meaning patient Pietersen has medication until Tuesday, June 12, 2018. As mentioned, all patients will be sent their second delivery on a Thursday, which will apply to all future deliveries.

The next 28-day delivery will be sent at least one week in advance on a Thursday. The second cycle begins on Friday, June 8, 2018, and runs until July 5, 2018. This means that the medication for the second 28-day cycle will be sent on Thursday, May 31, 2018.

In this case, patient Pietersen will receive medication again on Friday, June 1, 2018, for the cycle starting on June 8, 2018. The third delivery will be sent 28 days later on Thursday, June 28, 2018, received on June 29, and will start on Friday, July 6, 2018.

In this way, patient Pietersen may have some tablets left over depending on the date of the first delivery. Once the second delivery takes place on Thursday, a fixed pattern of Thursday deliveries is established, and deliveries occur every 28 days. On Thursday, medication is sent for the cycle starting the following Friday.

This ensures that there is always an opportunity for the physician and/or patient to respond in a timely manner if the medication is not received for any reason. Regenboog Apotheek then has the possibility to resend the medication.

Disulfiram Delivery Schedule

There is an overlap between the first and second deliveries due to setting Thursday as the delivery day. After that, the overlap is negligible, and delivery is sequential every 28 days.
