FAQ

What is the delivery time for ordered repeat prescriptions?

If you request your prescriptions before five o’clock, they will usually be ready from half-past eight the next day. If you need the medications the same day, please call us so we can find a suitable solution. There are over 25,000 medications in the Netherlands, and some substances have multiple names. You can understand that we cannot have all these medications in stock. We try to always keep the most commonly used medications in stock, but even these are sometimes out of stock. If you are prescribed something we do not currently have in the pharmacy, we will need to order it. We usually have it in-house for you the next working day. Unfortunately, some items may not be available or are poorly available nationwide. If you provide your phone number when ordering, we will inform you by phone in such a case. Of course, you can also call us yourself.

Why do I have to (partially) pay for some medications? I am already insured through the most comprehensive package of my health insurance?

There can be several reasons why you have to pay (a part of) the cost of your medications. Unfortunately, since January 1, 2004, many medications are no longer reimbursed. The minister decided this because these medications are also available over the counter. Another common reason you have to pay is because there is a co-payment for the medication. A co-payment means that the medication is more expensive than the maximum reimbursement set for those medications. If you want to know if and why you have to pay, please ask us.

I am not registered with you, can I still get my medications from you?

Yes, you can. As long as you provide the prescription when collecting/receiving the medication. If you bring your insurance information, we can even submit the costs directly to your insurance.

Can you supply all the medications I get prescribed?

Normally, we can supply any medication registered in the Netherlands. If, for any reason, we are unable to supply the requested medication, we will try to find an equivalent alternative in consultation with you and your doctor.

Am I required to choose a pharmacy near my GP?

No, you are always free to choose where you get your medications.

Do I always need a prescription for medications?

A medication must first be approved before it can be marketed in the Netherlands. Upon approval, it is also decided whether it can be purchased without a prescription or if a prescription is always needed. Medications that can be purchased without a prescription are usually also directly behind the pharmacy counter and are meant for treating minor complaints yourself. Most of these medications are no longer reimbursed, even if prescribed by the doctor. All other medications can only be obtained with a prescription. Some of these medications come with a co-payment, but most are fully reimbursed.

What is the “mandatory deductible” in health insurance?

The mandatory deductible is an amount that insured persons must pay when they incur medical costs. Health insurers may recover this amount.

Do I have to pay for my medications directly at the pharmacy because of the deductible?

No, you pay the mandatory deductible to your health insurer, not in cash at the pharmacy.
